Proteus
Proteus
creates a cutter location file suitable for input
into a numerical controlled milling machine from
any geometrical object represented by a cloud
of random x,y,z points. The cloud of points can
be obtained from any source and an example would
be the OBJ file output from the visualization
package Maya™ supplied by Silicon Graphics
Corporation.
Proteus
differs from traditional packages that require
the surface of the model to be able to be reduced
to a pure mathematical form. Proteus uses statistical
regression techniques on the points cloud to establish
the best-fit position of the cutting tool and
thus can derive a smooth tool path over the surface
of any shaped model.
